Since the devastating earthquake in Haiti, many people from all over the world have been working to help rebuild the country. The Oscar-winning actress and UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador, Nicole Kidman, has recently visited the country to help raise awareness about gender-based violence.
During her visit, Kidman saw how the national disaster was affecting girls and women. The current lack of security and inadequate shelter has caused them to be increasingly vulnerable to sexual and physical violence.
Even before the earthquake hit, violence against women and girls was extraordinarily high. A national census in 2006 found that one in three women in Haiti had experienced violence.
The average annual income, education and opportunities for women in Haiti are significantly lower than they are for men. Kidman is stressing the importance of long-term initiatives that will advance women’s livelihoods and increase gender equality.
